Jade is a sacred talismanic stone revered around the world and across time as a unique symbol of longevity and good fortune. Natural healers use jade to relieve grief, soothe trauma, end loneliness, and bestow sleep on the wakeful.
While jade is perceived by Western culture as being rooted in Eastern culture---and most especially that of China over the millenia---jade objects have an historical presence and significance in all areas where the stone can be found.
The wearing of jade pendants is believed to lift and center and calm the spirit in the midst of travails both large and small. This belief is such a widely venerated truth (and so ancient) that jade has always had a "therapeutic" aura.
Since the ups and downs of Life affect us all---the "downs" being what I name "travails both large and small"---I feel a pull toward the simple beauty and healing power that give to jade its deep, endless, and universal force of appeal.
As much as I respect each material I engage as an artist, I find that I am developing a special depth of regard for jade by virtue of the very difficulties in working with it. There is nothing in the "raw" nature of jade that is passive or soft.
Jade does not capitulate to the artist. Jade won't be tamed or subdued or made to behave. Jade is never an obedient dog wagging its tail and longing to play. My work with jade is a reverential task to honor and unlock its healing gifts.
